Dear Parish Family,

Since Deacon Ed will be preaching on All Saints’ Day, I would like to devote my reflection to All Souls’ Day, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed.

Many of you have not heard the funeral and graveside homilies I have preached because those moments are usually shared only with family and close friends. Yet every one of those funerals has reminded me that grief touches all of us. Whether recently or many years ago, each of us carries the memory of someone we love and miss.

All Souls’ Day invites us to pause and remember. We remember the empty chair at the dinner table, the voice we long to hear again, the laughter that once filled a room, and the love that continues to live in our hearts. Death remains one of life's deepest mysteries. No matter how prepared we think we are, death often catches us by surprise. It reminds us of our fragility and teaches us that life is precious and should never be taken for granted. One of the most moving lessons I have learned through funeral ministry is that there are times when words are not enough. There is a story of a priest who arrived at the funeral of a young man who had died tragically. The grieving family expected words of wisdom and consolation. Instead, the priest sat among them and wept. His tears spoke more eloquently than any sermon: “I do not have all the answers, but I am here with you.” Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer those who mourn is not explanation but presence.

As Christians, we reject the idea that God delights in death. We may not understand why suffering and loss occur, but we trust that God walks with us through our sorrow. There are no easy explanations for death. There is only faith, love, and hope in the midst of mystery. On this day, we thank God for the gift of memories. We treasure the moments we shared with those who have gone before us: the joys, the struggles, the laughter, and the love. We thank God for family and friends who support us in our grief, for the healing gift of time, and for the power of prayer that brings comfort to wounded hearts.

Most of all, we thank God for the promise of eternal life. Our loved ones were never truly ours to possess; they were gifts entrusted to us by God. As Scripture reminds us, "The earth is the Lord's and everything in it." One day we all return to the One from whom we came.

Therefore, All Souls’ Day is not only a day of remembrance but also a day of hope. We pray for our departed brothers and sisters and renew our confidence in Christ's promise: "Everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life."

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

Fr. Joseph

 roselawn wreaths america

Our goal is to have a wreath for every one of the 4,000 veterans laid to rest on our sacred grounds by 2026. The plan is to send a monthly email to folks as a reminder of the remarkable history of our Grounds' veterans. In addition, we hope to sponsor 71 fresh balsam wreaths to create a memorial display, a giant wreath, east of the Rose Garden. All sponsors will be acknowledged in the WAA 2026 program. Read up on each monthly history spotlight.

The Chalice for Vocations

chaliceThe Chalice for Vocations ministry was developed to promote fervent and devotional prayer for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. These specific intentions are raised as the chalice travels within the parish community.

A prayer guide is provided and geared for readers that are young or old.  Spontaneous and personal prayers for vocations are always acceptable and welcome also. Please incorporate prayers for an increase in vocations within your prayer life.

If you would like to receive the Chalice for Vocations for a week, please contact the parish office at 719-544-1886. Thank you. Be confident that your prayers are heard.

Take Home the Holy Family Shrine

coros hf

The Knights of Columbus (KOC) of St. Joseph (#9456) have introduced a new program called "The Holy Family"

We are inviting parishioners of any household to consecrate themselves to the Holy Family. Each week the parishioner will take the sanctuary of the Holy Family into their homes for one week of daily prayer. At the end of your week, you will bring back the sanctuary to the church for the next family.

Learn more

Attention parishioners, those who currently have taken home the Holy Family (Coros Program), please be sure to bring it back to the sacristy on the Saturday/Sunday after you received it so we can present it to another family at the next mass.  Thank You!
